Speaker 1:

Hey everybody and welcome back to Centre Pass, a roundabout podcast about a man talking netball and gets criticised for it. And today we're going to be doing the preview, or the review, I should say, of yesterday's game between the reigning premiers, tongayla, and the unde undefeated up until yesterday Rambalara, in the A-grade netball. We will also talk a little bit about what's coming up with finals-wise, who's going to be playing who, where, how, if, what, but yeah. So, starting with yesterday's match at Rambalara at 1.30, as I said, you had the reigning premiers Tongala up against Rumbelara, the powerhouse of Rumbelara, coming into the game. Tongala had lost their last two, really really wanting to probably come out and prove a point. Yesterday up against Rumbelara, rumbelara needed one more win to be undefeated for the whole year, seeing this was the last game for the Murray League, so there was a lot of things at stake for both sides. So, as I said, if you looked at it, yeah, tongayla, they lost last week against Denny Rams and the week before they lost against Moela. So and Moela were out of the eight, out of the sixth. So, yeah, really, tongala really had, they had things to prove. You know, I'm not sure what's happened with that throughout the year for them. But, yeah, they weren't the actual side that they should have been. I think they're a little bit disappointed in a few things, but yesterday, as I said, they had to beat Rumbler. Coming off two losses, they had to get their confidence back, their winning form back, coming into finals. If they lost they would drop down to six. If they won, I'm pretty sure they would have went up to fourth, because they were fifth at the time.

Speaker 1:

Rumbelara, on the other hand, really wanted to capitalize yesterday and stay undefeated all year. That's something that they've worked towards and if they beat Tongala, that's one tick ticked off. And then, obviously, the next thing is to go through undefeated in finals and win a premiership. So yesterday, 1.30 at Rumballara, it was going to be a tense game because, as I said, both sides had their own little battles that they wanted to win and that they wanted to fulfil. So, as I said, tongala wanted to get back in the winning circle, rumbler wanted to continue being undefeated.

Speaker 1:

The game itself started off as normal games have started off throughout the year. For Rumbler, they were a little bit slow at the start and it was a warm day. I must emphasize it was a warm day. I must emphasize, it was a warm day, I think it was about 21, 22, and I mean those days are going to continue. That's what finals are. You start to know that there's finals in the air. When it starts to get a little bit warmer, you're coming into spring. Obviously, this is the second last week of uh, winter and you're coming into spring and then finals hit. So it was a warm day and it was going to be uh, very interesting to see how the girls because you know, totally contrast from last week, last week, yeah, it was bucking down rain, it was windy, it was cold, uh, to come up this week and then all of a sudden you've got the total different elements of being hot, not hardly any wind. So it was going to be interesting to see how the girls would come up and play and it was a fast pace.

Speaker 1:

The first quarter it was very much a to and fro and there was a lot of mistakes made on both sides. So, obviously, the pressure on Rumble, as I said, they wanted to capitalise. They've been slow the last couple of weeks in their start, so they really wanted to capitalise and they got in front and then, yeah, there was a couple of turnovers. You know, they really started to, yeah, push Tongla. When they got in front. You had Emily Williams and Sarah Thorpe for Rumballara running that center and wing attack and also wing defense, and then you had Kai running wing attack as well, tiana Steele and Jess Bamblett and in that defensive circle, and then the ever-reliable superstar, jess Barnes and her right-hand woman in that shooting circle with us. So they started to take a little bit of control, rumble R in that first quarter.

Speaker 1:

As I said, there was an emphasis on them that they really wanted to get their first quarters going, because last week against Moama they were down by one, I think. The week before against Denny, I think, they started off being down as well. So they really really wanted to push that first quarter, get it going, put the pressure on Tongala right from the start, get them to make fundamental mistakes, get them to make passing errors and there was, there was a lot of passing errors. Town of Steel and Jesse Bamblin on Millie Brock really worked that defensive circle well.

Speaker 1:

As I said, the midcourt of Rambalara's was full of run. As I said, the midcourt of Rambalara's was full of run and, yeah, besides Grace Hammond, the coach of Tonga, she always puts in 110% and there was no question yesterday what her intentions were and they were really, really trying. They were playing a little bit of a physical game on Rambalara to try, and you know, maybe get into Rumballara's heads. They know that there's a couple of girls at Rumballara that if they start to get a bit physical that they'll get physical back and they're hoping that the retaliation would be against them. So that first quarter was a heated quarter. The game was on.

Speaker 1:

So that first quarter was a heated quarter, the game was on. There was a lot of nerves where they really really, yeah, there was a lot of mistakes and, as I said, rumble R got the ascendancy. They hit the front, they started to create turnovers. There was pressure on that ball and one of the things I noticed yesterday was, you know, the emphasis on hands over the ball, just hands over the ball. Wherever the ball was, hands over the ball put pressure on the person with the ball and put pressure on bringing it down the court. And that's what they did. So that first quarter it was hot, literally, and hot in the gameplay as well. As I said, there was a lot of running because they were switching, they were using their 45s, using the angles.

Speaker 1:

Both sides were A lot of missed passes, as I said, a lot of missed shots, yeah, especially for Tongala. They probably could have been a little bit closer at quarter time, but they missed a lot of shots. So quarter time it was 12 to 8 Rumba's way. So four goal lead to Rumba, which is, as I said, it's something that they wanted to push for the last two, three weeks where they've been behind at quarter time and they just really didn't want to play catch up anymore. They would rather the opposition play catch up anymore. They, they would rather the opposition catch play catch up to them. So quarter time they came off and you can tell the girls on both sides were really feeling the heat. Um, with yesterday it was really, yeah, the heat was on, the game was pressure, and once you pressure on the game and and with the heat, you know it, it gets you exhausted a little bit more. And, yeah, you can tell the girls are putting in the water and yeah.

Speaker 1:

So second quarter come out and you knew that. Well, you'd think that Tom Gale would come out and go right. Yeah, because, as I said, they are the premiership, they are the reigning premiers, they have got a quality side and I'm pretty sure they have regained most of their girls from last year. And also they had a point to prove They've lost two in a row and that's just not Tonga. And I know that's not Tonga. And I know Millie Brock and Gracie Hammond are very proud people at Tonga and I know that's just not them.

Speaker 1:

So you were expecting second quarter for Tonga to come out and really really hit Rambalara with everything they've got, but it sort of didn't pan out that way. Rambalara just continued on from what they did in the first quarter and it just looked like Tonga were playing catch-up. They were second to the ball, you know, and it's amazing how you could be half a second too late to a ball to either get a hand on it or get a tip or get an intercept and um, that's how tonga were. And then, yeah, they're getting it into millie, um and the other shooter and it just wasn't. They weren't capitalizing when they got the ball. And then it was um, you know, I know, yeah, at one stage, yeah, I'm not really sure what quarter it was, but I think millie brock had about five shots because, well, she is a tall girl, she is a very tall, you know, I know at one stage I'm not really sure what quarter it was, but I think Millie Brock had about five shots, because she is a tall girl. She is a very tall girl, very talented netballer, and she was off and you know it's very hard to try and get rebounds. But you know, it's something the Rumbler probably needs to look at is, you know, working their rebounds out, because they only had five shots on goal before she actually got it in.

Speaker 1:

But, as I said, that second quarter Rambalara just continued on from where they left off in the first quarter. You were hoping that Tongala would find something, but yeah, they sort of didn't. It looked like they were just going through the motions again in that second quarter they were putting a lot of pressure on the shooters. So obviously they've worked out and everyone probably has a double team in Jessie Barnes and hoping that they pass it to her and then they're going to get a tip-off from the intercept and then bring it down to court. They pass it to her and then they're going to get a tip off from the intercept and then bring it down to court. It's just, they really, really, yeah, they sort of.

Speaker 1:

They just didn't show a lot of intensity in that second quarter, tom Gaylor, they were sort of yeah, ifs and buts and they weren't real too short, like there was. I don't think there was any held balls, but there was a lot of balls held, if you know what I mean, especially on Tongala, trying to work out where they're going to shoot, where they're going to pass it. Rambalara yeah, they had their little problems as well, like, yeah, there was sort of yeah, disconnections, they just yeah, that second quarter they weren't really playing like the team they've had played before. I mean, don't get me wrong, they were playing top netball and they were really restricting Tongala. But yeah, that second quarter was really. It was a really really different quarter.

Speaker 1:

Rumbler continued on from the first quarter, but it just yeah. It just didn't feel that intensity Halftime come along. So Rambalara shot 17 goals to Tiny's 10. Oh, sorry, to Tiny's 7. So Rambalara, 14 goals in front at half-time and that is probably a good lead to have coming into halftime.

Speaker 1:

As I said, tony, last time I think last time they played Rumbler and Tony I think Rumbler won by 29 with 30 goals. So you were thinking to yourself, yeah, this is going to be another one of those games. But, as I said, it was getting hot and the players were starting to feel it Emily and Sarah working their asses off in that midcourt, and Nikoi, and then they would bring Deeks on, and then they'd bring Larnie on and yeah, and it was just, the heat was on because Tongala's wing defence was physical, their wing attack was very quick, so trying to curb those girls as well. So, as I said, uh, 29 to 15, 14 goal lead at half time to rumble are, uh, with a lot of work to do from both sides. So you know, it was a totally different, like last week's game against moama, even though I was in the wet and everything else.

Speaker 1:

And yeah, I will say again that the umpiring last week was absolutely one of the best umpiring expeditions I've seen from two young guys. Yeah, I found out that they're from Melbourne and it made the game so enjoyable to watch and there was a lot of pressure on that game, this game yesterday. It just wasn't. You know, there were some missings from umpires and they were feeling the heat as well, because I know the young kid that was umpiring with Sue and they did a great job, these two umpires, but he was under the shack at one stage just trying to get a bit of shade because it was hot and it's probably no one's used to that heat at this time of year because it's been cold and wet. So, poor old Sue I'm pretty sure that's her name she was out on one side umpiring in the heat and the young fella on the other side was taking advantage of the Rumbler or Tom Gaylor, shed and cover and, yeah, getting a bit of shade. So it was.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, the game yesterday was a totally different game to last week. It wasn't as flowing and whether that's you know your last game, you've played 17, 18 games. Yeah, you just yeah. I know the girls don't want it to be over because they've got, yeah, they've got unfinished business on both sides, but it just seemed like it was just that that was the way the game was being played. So, as I said, halftime 14-goal lead to Rumballara. Yeah, they were playing good netball, but they weren't playing their best. Tiny definitely weren't playing their best and I've seen their best.

Speaker 1:

So, three-quarters, third quarter, they all came out and it was just sort of both sides weren't going with the motions but, as I said, it just wasn't that intensity. Um, yeah, there was a lot of pressure, a lot of forced um, forced turnovers, a lot of forced balls in um, yeah, tiny. Their defenders were starting to work out, jesse Barnes and Soph. So, yeah, they really had to mix it up there. I know Tiana and Jesse Bamlett sort of started to mix it up because Millie was starting to get a few easy shots on goal. So they were mixing it up there and it worked well for them. I noticed a couple of times that Tiana would stand off Millie and just watching that ball come in, because as soon as they seen millie vacant and being tall, they go, yeah, and then tiana was able to get the tip um and get the ball away.

Speaker 1:

So, um, that third quarter, yeah, and then, and then soph sort of lit the stage up a bit and then she started to find her um, she started to find her range in shooting. I think, oh, I wouldn't be surprised, I think, if Soph shot more goals in that third quarter than what Jesse Barnes did, which is great, because you can't just rely on one shooter, you've got to have two shooters that can, you know, shoot near equal goals as each other. And in that third quarter Soph sort of stood up a bit and it sort of frazzzzled um, the defense of tongala, because they were so used to jesse barnes shooting all the goals and all of a sudden their sofa's just chipping in, shooting them for wherever she wanted to. Um, you know there was going to be a low scoring game. So I think, um, over the over the course of the year, I think Rambalara was averaging 65 goals a game and I think they were averaging 35 goals that they were restricting the opposition to. So you know it was going to be a low-scoring game or low enough, but I don't think it was going to be a defensive game. It was going to be more so a shootout, because both defences are really really good, but on both sides of the netball, on both sides of teams, you've got really really good shooters on both sides.

Speaker 1:

So, third quarter, yeah, rumbler, they were getting turnovers and all they had to do was win their centres. And you know, ideally yeah, you'd like to be, you know if you know, and it's ideally, yeah, you'd like to be, you know, if you know, you pretty much know the game's over at three quarter time if you at least say between 17 and 20 goals up, because you know that works out to be in a 15, 15 minute quarter and with hardly any time on um, it sort of works out to be, you know, a goal every 40 seconds and if you've got pressure on pressure on that, 40 seconds can go pretty quick. So you know, if you're up by 17 to 20 goals at three-quarter time, you're pretty much the game's over. And Rumbelara were really hoping to do that. But, as I said, it was a seesawing game.

Speaker 1:

In that third quarter Rumbelara would shoot three, tony would shoot two and Rumb um tiny would shoot two and rumbler shoot one and tony shoot two and it was going backwards and forwards, a couple of a couple of intercepts and a couple of force passes, um, and, and as I said it was, it was getting physical. The game was getting physical. You can notice that. Um, yeah, there was a. There was a few um matchups that were starting it a bit physical, so that was interesting to watch, and andups that were starting to get a bit physical, so that was interesting to watch. And the Heat were starting to play its toll because Rumble R were using the rolling sub a fair bit, trying to get Emily off to have a break, trying to get Sarah off to have her, and she jokes all the time that all she needs is just a five-minute break. So they're trying to get her off as well.

Speaker 1:

Tiana come off in that third quarter, probably for the last uh, two, three minutes, um, you know, just to try and get their breath back um, and and and also to get um, uh, tass bamblett on to qualify, who's an absolute quality defender as well, her and tiana working well in that defensive end, and and also tash and jess bambert working well. So it was also to try and get her qualified. But then, yeah, you've got lani coming on and was doing a great job, um, with she does it every week. Yeah, with her defending um, kai was, you know, it was just rolling subs both sides. Yeah, you just didn't know who was on who. You didn't know who was swapping with who, who you know, and they, I know tiny, tried things. They, yeah, they put um, yeah, they put their wing defense in the wing attack and they put their center in the wing defense and they were just swapping things over left front center and rambalara doing the same thing because, as I said, the heat was there.

Speaker 1:

Um, as I said, that third quarter, they were just both backwards and forwards. Backwards and forwards, shoot, shoot, shoot. They were forcing the ball in. Sometimes there was missed passes. Three-quarter time come and, as I said, you'd want to be at least 17 to 20 goals up, but Rumbler are only 15 goals up and that's gettable. So the game wasn't finished.

Speaker 1:

And I know, you know, tony, have to shoot 15 goals or 16 goals to win and have to stop Rambla Rally. But once you get a sniff and you start to get a couple of, you know, a couple of turnovers and whatnot, it can start to happen. And that sort of happened in the last quarter. So, tony, come out in the last quarter and they started to get a couple of turnovers and they got shots on. So they were getting three shots and Rumba only getting one shot or two shots. And you were starting to think, well, you know, and I think at one stage there it dropped down to nearly a single digit lead to Rumba Lara. It dropped down to nearly a single-digit lead to Rambalara. And you think, oh, tiny's on song here.

Speaker 1:

And there was an incident in the last quarter I think it was the last quarter, it might have been the third quarter where there was a bit of push and shove and there was a warning and an advanced play and it sort of yeah, tiny, sort of had their heads up a bit and, um, rumble. I sort of had to dig deep. Um, that they will know. Yeah, the game's not, the game's not over. And their voice started to happen a bit more too, because in the third quarter rumba's voice sort of it sort of dropped. Um, normally they're very vocal, um, but it dropped. And um, but in that third set last quarter, yeah, they were back to hands over the ball, putting pressure on the girls, putting pressure on here, putting pressure on there.

Speaker 1:

Jesse Bamblin came off for a while and just trying to rest because, as I said, it was hot and the game was heating up. And, as I said, tony, they were getting a couple of shots on goal and then, as I said, they were letting Millie get rebound after rebound, which you know you shouldn't be really doing. If you can't shoot the first one. You should be getting a rebound and sending it back. But they were. It was just placement of where the bodies were and everything else. And then, yeah, it was sort of that.

Speaker 1:

The last quarter was just a. Yeah, it just didn't feel intensity sort of dropped and yeah, you can understand with the weather and being warm, but the intensity on both sides sort of dropped and I think it was about six minutes to go and Rumba were up by 11 or 12 goals and you sort of start. Yeah, it was sort of then that everyone just realized that, rumble, we're going to win the game. Um, tony, we're going to go into finals, uh, on a three game losing streak. So it's not something that they wanted to do, um, and you know, to rumba's credit, they did fight it out to the end, you know, tony, and that last quarter did put the pressure on them and I mean you can just see in their scoreline they shot 14 goals to Rumbelar at 15. So they nearly matched it with Rumbelar in that last quarter. So pretty much it was a goal for goal, for goal for goal, and if that's the case and you win your Senators, you're pretty much. Yeah, it's pretty hard for the opposition, but they did. As I said, tony, I'm pretty sure got Tiny, I'm pretty sure got down to single digit behind and yeah, so the final score was 59 to 43. So congratulations to Rumballara, undefeated all year. They know they've still got a job to do because they are targeted Two weeks time, on the 7th of September at Rumballara they will face Moama in a semi-final to get into the grand final.

Speaker 1:

Um, I will bring up who, uh, the other sides will be playing um, because I know the murray league have already put it up. So I'll get it up now. Um, and we'll have a look at. Yeah, so the fixture for next week for um. So the fixture for next week for the Murray League for finals in Nepal, o-grade.

Speaker 1:

So on Saturday, the 31st of August, first elimination final at Malwaela. This is going to be an absolute cracking game. You're going to have Finlay up against Tongala. So, finlay, I'm pretty sure they won yesterday. I know they won yesterday. I mean they have been playing some very good netball. So, finlay, yesterday they played Nathalia. Nathalia are in the finals as well, but they beat Nathalia by 13 goals yesterday. And you just look at their score breakdown yeah, it was close at the start, two-goal advantage to Finlay in that quarter time, but then a seven-goal advantage and a 13-goal advantage and then it ended up, yeah, 13 goals. So it was pretty much even that last quarter. So congratulations to Finlay and Chelsea McDonald. Well done getting Getting third.

Speaker 1:

So, as I said, they will play Tongala next week on Saturday for the first elimination final. That's going to be an absolute cracker. Yeah, I think Finlay have beaten Tongala before, so yeah, it's going to be as. I don't think like, yeah, you'd want to hope tiny stay in it. Um, yeah, you don't want them dropping out. You know straight sets, um, after winning the premiership last year. So, and finley have got a point to prove. You know they want to. You know they've rebuilt, you know They've definitely rebuilt Finlay, you know, up against Tongala who really, really, yeah, I'm not really sure what's going on with Tongala, but yeah, so going to be a cracking game next week in netball on Saturday between Finlay and Tony at Moela, and then the second elimination final, which is Sunday, the 1st first day of spring.

Speaker 1:

You've got Denny against Nathalia. So Denny yesterday against Baruga absolutely smashed them, proved the point. Ruger absolutely smashed them, proved the point. They play in the fire next week. Who got beaten by Finley yesterday? So, and the fire all year? Yeah, unfortunately, georgie Walpole went down with a knee at the start of the year and that she was one of their gun recruits. She's an absolute gem of a shooter coming from Shep United. They also brought in Cara Blizzard. Tracy Burton was a coach. They brought in Ash Khan from Shep, yeah. So they had plans this year, finlay. It just didn't go their way because of injuries. So next week they do play Deliloquin, second elimination, final Probably going to be another absolute cracking game. So my predictions for that would be well.

Speaker 1:

I honestly think Finlay will beat Tongala next week because I've noticed on the Finlay's team sheet that they've got Lily Sharp back on the Finlay's team sheet that they've got Lily Sharp back and, yeah, her defence is just absolutely sublime. She's got a leap on her. But at the end of the day, it's how you play. You're only as good as your last game. Unfortunately, tongayla went down to Rambalara yesterday and Finlay beat Nathalia. So Finlay, coming into it with all the form in the world and you've just got to have a look at the form yeah, finlay, their last five games they've won. Last five games. Tongala, they've only won two out of their last five. So, yeah, you've really got to think that maybe, yeah, maybe, it's the end for Tongala. I hope they prove people wrong, because they are a class side, they are the winning premiers and you don't want to be getting dropped out the year after and thinking, oh, it's just a fluke that you got in there, so I really hope that it's going to be a cracking game.

Speaker 1:

My pick, though, definitely going to be Finlay, because I think they've got the form at the moment, they've got the girls to do it, and Lily Sharp, back in that defensive end, will have to be cracker. The next game, as I said, will be Denny against Nathalia. So the last five games for Denny, they've won three and lost two, so they've won their last two. Denny have, obviously, nathalia getting beaten by Finlay on the weekend, but prior to that they'd won their last four, so these two are well balanced. These two are well balanced sides.

Speaker 1:

Um, I honestly think, though, denny will um, come up and prevail. I just don't think nathalia's got the depth. I think, um, yeah, they, I think because of circumstances outside, and Nathalia has helped them to where they are being fit. But then, in saying that, though, you look at their fours and against Nathalia they only conceded 632 goals for the year I mean, it's only four goals less, or four goals more sorry than rumble are, um, yeah, that's just phenomenal. They are that like they're defending with tegan sutton, and um, ash khan is very, very good nathalia. So, yeah, they're going to come up against, uh, rihanna maxwell.

Speaker 1:

So you know in in saying that maybe Nathalia will, you know, will pop up and win and then, if that's the case, it'll be a Finlay Nathalia first semifinal. And you really I think, yeah, finlay are in a box, they are the dark horse this year. They are the real, real dark horse this year. I know anything can happen, but Finlay's on fire. Chelsea McDonald's got them going and, as I said, with the inclusion of Lily Sharp now it really helps their defensive end. Whether they can go the whole hog, I really don't know, because at the end of the day, rumble are really going to hope that in two weeks' time, the second elimination final, they do beat Moama. So then they don't have to. I'm assuming, I'm thinking that whoever loses that second elimination final will have to come up the week after in a prelim against Finlay. And I know Rumbelara probably don't want to do that. They'd rather Moema do it, suss it all out. I mean, at the end of the day they didn't have Lily Sharp. When Rumbelara and Finlay played and Rumbelara beat them by 17 goals, he wouldn't say that Louis Sharps is worth 17 goals, but then saying that they kind of still didn't play either. So it's going to be interesting this final series.

Speaker 1:

My predictions are Finlay will get over the top of Tongaela next week. I really think Denny will probably get over the top of Nathalia, but that one will be a close game. I think the Finlay-Tonny game will probably be Finlay by at least 15 goals, but I think the Denny-Nathalia game could be a lot closer. I'm going to pick Denny, I'm going to pick Deniliquin to beat Nathalia by at least five goals, which means it'll be a Finlay-Deniliquin first semifinal and then it'll be a Moema and Rambalara second semifinal at Rambalara. And yeah, as I said yesterday, rambalara were able to get over the top of Tongala by 14 goals, 13 goals, whatever it was to remain undefeated for the year. So congratulations to Rambalara for going for the whole year undefeated and that's not a mean feat. I know Danny did it last year and they dropped that in straight sets and that's not something you want. So, rambalara, I think they've got the talent than you want. So, rumble, I think they've got the talent. I think how they've beaten other sides and the margins they've beaten other sides, I think it's going to hold them. Instead. They're going to have a rest now. They'll have a break. They've got some full-on training to do, rethink some things and restart, because in two weeks' time it's a massive game again against Moama. But, as I said, it'll be Finlay, tony, danilova, gwyneth. They are first elimination final, second elimination final. Finlay will win, I'm sure Danny will win. Those two will play off in the first semifinal to try and win, to go up against the loser of the second semifinal on uh that day.

Speaker 1:

So again, thank you for listening. Um, I will be doing a uh preview of the finals for next week. Um, I know rumbler has got the week off and so has moema, so it's going to be a cracking final series. Again, congratulations to Rumballara for going undefeated all year. It's not a mean feat, but the job's not done. They've still got some things to do. And congratulations to the other finalists Well-deserved. While you're still playing finals, you're still in for a chance to win the grand final. So congratulations everyone. Thank you for listening. I'm your host, nuff Said, and thank you for listening to Centre Pass. I'm out, bye.
