Speaker 1:

Hey, welcome to Centre Pass, a roundabout podcast about a man who talks netball, and this week we're doing a review on Rumbelara and Achuki United. It's going to be a very different Rumbelara side. They took the park or took the court this weekend just gone. They're missing Jess Bamblett, through injury, obviously in that goalkeeping position. They were also missing Sarah, who'd been overseas and ran a marathon so she'd only come back on the Saturday, and then they were also missing Sophie, who had gone over to Broome for work. So it was a very different side.

Speaker 1:

Rumbla, I thought it might have been a little bit interesting the game, because you lose that connection. They brought Lavelle in, ali Morgan, also Madika, you also had Lani, so they brought those girls up from B grade and under 17s just to see how well they'd go. And yeah, like as I said, I thought it would have been a little bit different the way the game was. But yeah, it seems like I think I said it once before that you can. You know it's better to have a champion team than what it is, a team of champions, and it proved on the weekend the versatility of Rumballara, especially the girls that they had in. So Tiana Steele, it was a bit unsure whether she was actually going to come back, but she slotted straight back into that goal defence position and, yeah, I have to say she played an absolute blinder of a game. And yeah, it's sort of with those three out, you know, it's like power calls you take. Yeah, you disconnect because you've got girls that have been playing together for you know, 11, 12, 13 weeks and then all of a sudden you haven't got girls playing. So it was a very different side that Rumbler put out on the court on Saturday. So it was interesting to see how they were going to go and how Achiki and Ida were going to capitalise on that. Unfortunately, it didn't really turn out that way. Um, probably, I'd say the first, probably, uh, five, maybe ten, ten minutes of the quarter you would say that, um, yeah, probably the cheeky knight had matched it with rumballara, but after that it was sort of, yeah, it was sort of all over Red Rover for Rumballara, they, um, they, they just put the hammer down. Um, and you know that first quarter, they just, they just started to. It was like the Rumballara role. You wouldn't even think that the you know they had these players missing. Yeah, they've got caliber players, quality players missing, as I said, in Jess Bamblett, sophie Atkinson and Sarah. So they were missing quality players. But the girls that they brought up just knew what to do. They really, really knew what to do.

Speaker 1:

So the starting lineup was you had Emily in goal shooter, you had Jessie Barnes in goal attack, then in wing attack you had Kai, then in center you had Madika. So sorry, kai played wing defense. I think you had Lani in wing attack. It might have been switched around because they made a lot of changes and they give a lot of the, they give a lot of the young girls an opportunity Rambalara to go out there and play, but I think, yeah, larnie might have been wing defence and Kai was wing attack and Madika was centre. And then obviously you had Tiana Steele in goal defence and they had Tash Bamblett in goal keeper and that there, yeah, it was a bit funny on how those two were going to go. Tash, obviously playing defence when she played for Shep Swans and a very good defender. So it was going to be interesting to see how her and Tiana would meld and mesh in that defensive circle.

Speaker 1:

And probably, as I said, probably five minutes into it you sort of started to see the versatility of Rambalara and how well they adapted to the situations that they had. So, you know, jesse Barnes, down in that shooting circle, was just phenomenal again and she sort of, you know, brought Emily along with her. Madika was feeling a bit down in the weather as well, but she did a cracking job in centre. Kai was doing a great job in wing wing attack. Probably, say lani, it probably wasn't her best game, but yeah, she was still there and they sort of rotated around. So, um, they brought lavelle on wing defense. Um, I think they had a winger attack as well.

Speaker 1:

So that first quarter, uh, rumba just come out, um, and did what pretty much rumba do or have done every week. So, yeah, they come out, they just use the ball so well. And, as I said, some of these girls haven't played in this A-grade side, but they just, they all played a role. They all went out there to play a role and they played for each other and they just started to gel and meld together, mesh together in that first quarter. So the score breakdown first quarter, end of the first quarter, was 16-8, so it was an eight-goal lead to Rumballara. You know, kudos to Echiki United. Yeah, they put it up to Rumballara. They did some very good things and they're a very, very young side. So Tana Edwards has done very well.

Speaker 1:

You've got Bishi, that's come over from Moama. She played goal defence. She's always been a great player, so she sort of had that maturity, mature head in that back line as well. So they had the experience and then they also had the back line as well. So they had the experience. And then they also had the young girls as well for Echuca United and they were very young girls and they did well. They stood up well up against, I mean, you can almost say, the powerhouse of Murray League at the moment in Rumbelara. So, as I said, score breakdown 16-8 in that first quarter.

Speaker 1:

Second quarter come out and there was a lot of changing. So Medica was feeling a bit under the weather, kai went to centre, alan Morgan went to wing attack, you still had Lani in wing defence. Nothing else sort of changed with the game. So they sort of it was just how far Rumbler were going to go and that second quarter they really, really stamped it. To be honest, their second quarters have always been very good. They've always been able to get out there and do what they have to do in that second quarter and they did it again and, as I said, they were missing three of their best players. Well, every single player out there for Rumballara is a great player. They do great things and they are great players in their roles. So in their positions they are some of the best in the league.

Speaker 1:

You know, and you've got Jess Bamblett, who's you know, she's that rock there in that defence. She was missing Soph, who you know. Her and Jessie Barnes work so well in that circle, and then Sarah with that drive. So you're sort of missing that drive. And, as I said, madika was a little bit under the weather as well. So for them to do what they did in that second quarter with the girls and, as I said, with the young girls that they had as well coming up through under-17s and B-grade yeah, rambalara like if they had a full, if they really had their full list, god knows how far more in front they would have been.

Speaker 1:

So, second quarter, they piled on 16 goals to Echuca United's what's that six? So they beat that quarter by 10 goals, rumble R. So they were coming off feeling good about themselves. I know at quarter time they come off. And Tana Steele was sort of. Yeah, it was a little bit funny. She said she wasn't. Yeah, she didn't really feel it, but I mean, you know, she hadn't played for three weeks. So yeah, it was that second quarter.

Speaker 1:

She come out and she was taking intercepts. Her and Tash Bamblett worked so, so well in that that um, defensive circle. They were pipping off balls. Tash is very mobile, like tiana, so they were getting the intercepts. They were picking the balls off, um, so, yeah, she, you know, to take over um, jesse, uh, jesse bamblett's position. Yeah, she did very, very well.

Speaker 1:

Well, emily started to find her way in that shooting circle as well with Jessie Barnes, so she was starting to get some shots under the goal, under the ring, and even starting to find her range. But in the midcourt they just seemed to work it out themselves. As I said, they had Ali Morgan, who's, you know, I think, under-17s. Lavelle, who's under 17s. Yeah, they just they had girls. They just came up and they just knew what to do. They really knew what to do.

Speaker 1:

They were nullifying like and Kai you know the ever-reliable Kai and, as I said, lani, yeah, she sort of, yeah, she sort of wasn't having the game that she normally has. There was a couple of things. There was a couple of times where she was only just, yeah, the ball would come down and she'd only pick it off with one hand and she was losing it and the defense was coming through and grabbing it, which is quite legal and quite fine. So, yeah, she was just having a bit of an off day. I mean, they were all entitled to have off days. But yeah, lani was sort of having an off day, so she sort of come off and Lavelle come onto that wing defence and she just, yeah, rock solid. Yeah, she come second in the league, best and fairest in the under-17s last year, so she knows how to play netball and with her, tiana and Tash Bamblett down in that defensive area. They really, really worked well and, as I said, they restricted them to six goals but also piled on 16 of their own. So halftime was 32-14. So nearly, yeah, 18-goal lead. I always say, yeah, rumbler, if they're in front by at least 20 goals at half-time, it's pretty hard to stop them. They'll just keep on going.

Speaker 1:

Third quarter come out. As I said, emily again started to find her range. So she was starting to pick the ball off a bit further out and having shots outside her comfort zone. The ever-reliable Jessie Barnes. Barnes, I mean, if she doesn't win the league best and fairest this year, I'll go. He.

Speaker 1:

Um, yeah, she's just an absolute superstar in that goal. Yeah, it's in that goal. Shooting circle um, yeah, it's very it's. It's very hard. Well, it's, it's, it's very strange and it's very hard to compliment how good she is. I know watching her from afar in GV you'd only see her every now and then, whenever the opposition were playing them or whenever Tiana was at Swans or whatever. You'd only see her every now and then and you really don't understand, by only seeing her every now and again, how good she is. And, like this year, I've been grateful and thankful to see probably one of the greatest shooters, greatest players, to play modern netball in gb and murray league. Um, yeah, she's just phenomenal. She's just her rebounding and a demanding of the ball and just her shooting prowess and what she does and what she does to the players.

Speaker 1:

And this is where, yeah, you've got so many leaders. I'll just go back to the first quarter. It was an incident in the first quarter. I only just remembered where you've got so many leaders. And these girls respect each other, this Rumballara A-grade side. They really, really respect each other.

Speaker 1:

So there was an incident in the first quarter where, yeah, a couple of girls Lani and Ali Morgan and that were sort of taking the ball with one hand but being young and having Emily and Jess in that goal circle and being young and Emily not normally playing there, they sort of weren't throwing the ball to where they should have been throwing it. And there was an incident there where Tiana was in the centre, third, and she just turned around and yelled at Jess and she goes Jess, you need to tell the girls where they've got to go. They're young, they're not knowing where they've got to go. You need to tell them. And Jess Barnes just turned around and sort of gave Tiana the nod and turned around to the girls and said right, girls, this is where they've got so many leaders on that court, tiana in that back line with Jesse Bamblett. And then you know, you've got Soph, you've got Emily, sarah, you've got Jess and Jesse Barnes. You know, they just got so many leaders there and they just knew. You know, and, as I said, it was just a matter of Tiana just noticing what was going on and just saying to Jesse Barnes hey, look, tell a girl and she did, and you know they executed it to perfection. You know young Ella in there and Lavelle, they really executed things to perfection.

Speaker 1:

So half, you know, after half time it sort of was all downhill for a cheeky lot. They tried. You know, hats off again. As I said to Tanner, edwards and Bishi, they've got some girls that have got some good talent and give them a couple of years and they keep that nucleus of girls. They'll be a very good side because they are like some of their young girls forgive me, I apologise, I don't know their names, but their shooters were good, their defenders were good. Their mid-court was good good, their defenders were good. Yeah, they just they need midcourt was good, um, yeah, so give them a couple of years of playing together and getting the nucleus up with that with that club and I'll be back to the way they were back in 2019.

Speaker 1:

So, uh, getting back to rumballara, though they just couldn't put a foot wrong. Um, they the girls it was like you weren't even missing Jesse, bamblett, sarah and Soph. I mean, yeah, you want them in your side 100%, but it was just because the other girls stepped up and they knew exactly what to do and they knew their role and they just executed it well. They just got on the court, knew what they had to do, knew where to go and Rumballara's game is just pressure. It is just pressure, hands over ball.

Speaker 1:

There was a couple of times there where, yeah, the goal attack, where, yeah, the goal attack, tiana had led the goal attack and Madika would come over and cut off the goal attack. But then the centre would come through and sometimes Lani was a little bit slow, as I said, she was having a bit of an off day and they all do, but she was a bit off and she wasn't getting to that centre in time. Tiana just said to Madika she said don't worry about my player now, step up and put pressure on that centre. And she did and they caused turnover. So, yeah, madika, putting that pressure on that centre, hands over the ball. Every time that Rumbelara defended it was hands over the ball, it was putting pressure on them. You know, there was a couple of times there they did get some held balls and there was a couple of times there they did get some hell balls and there was a couple of times it was very close to being hell ball because they made Achuki United pass back and try to reset. But by the time they passed back, I felt sorry for them in a way, because they'd passed back and then, if they looked up, all they'd seen was a line of Rumballara girls and yeah, you look at that back.

Speaker 1:

Third for Rumballara, you know, except for Jess Bamber, because she wasn't there. But you've got Tiana, who's just, you know, she just was a superstar on the weekend. You've got Tash Bamber, who was a superstar on the weekend. They both have worked so well together. Then you've got Lavelle, and then you've got medica, or kai, um yeah, and and then lani as well.

Speaker 1:

They're just putting pressure on them and they were just building that wall and it's just. And they were so like you know, jada and um tash were able to like defend two or three off one. Yeah, they'd be going, yeah, they'd be moving from one to the other, and just their talk. Yeah, I want to just get some audio of their talk. And then, even when Tiana just banned it, but in that defensive circle, just their talk on how they set up and what they say to each other. You know, go, post, go, post, go, middle go, middle, go, pocket go. And they both knew tarsh and tiana knew exactly where to go. They, they respected each other's calls and they were yeah, they were high-fiving each other and they were tapping each other and and and really pushing each other along. And, yeah, it would have been pleasing for, uh, jess bam.

Speaker 1:

But sitting on that on that boundary line and seeing every single girl that put their foot on that court and wearing a Rumbelara dress to just be able to step up, yeah, she has to be so proud of what they did on the weekend. Now, yeah, and this is no disrespect for Chuk United, but they were lowly on the ladder. So, as I said, they have got a break and then Rumbelara's next three games are going to be massive. So, three-quarter time, rumbelara put on 14 goals, and I mean Chugan might have put on 11, but they pretty much matched it with Rumbelara in that third quarter and that was just pure because they just showed a bit of tenacity in that. But, as I said, they'd look up and, yeah, they'll be like where do I go? Yeah, you've got these. Yeah, you've got these great players for rumble. I was just standing there looking at you. You know pressure on the ball. You know hands on the, hands over the ball, just pressure and making them have to reset, sit, you know, pass back and reset and um, yeah.

Speaker 1:

So the third, the last quarter, there was a lot of changing around. You know, larnie went off, I think Medica went back to centre, kai was wing defence. I think Kai went to centre as well and had that drive and had a bit of mongrel in that centre. Lavelle stayed wing defence sorry, and the others didn't change, I think. Actually, I think Emily went to goal attack and I'm going to take my hat off to Emily.

Speaker 1:

Her work rate in that circle is unbelievable. Like she was coming out leading, she was getting clobbered. Yeah, it was all in the game of the netball. Yeah, I was contesting on both sides and the umpires let it go, which was great. Yeah, they could have pulled up every single thing, but they let it go. And just her work rate. And when you've got two shooters that have got an absolute engine on them and they just their right, I mean you're just going to confuse the shit out of defenders after a while. You're just not going to be going. They'll be like um, where where are they now? What are they doing? So emily's uh work right.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, all the way through, but especially in that last quarter, as I said, she started to find her, um, she started to find her range. So she was shooting them outside her normal range and sort of Jess Barnes, let her go, so she'd give her the freedom. And you know, that goes down to having, you know, jess Barnes as a great leader. You know, just to let her go and go. Yep, you got it. You got it, girl. And there was just that talk. There was a lot of talk, even you know, having Tash Bandlett down there. She was talking to the girls. She was encouraging the girls and Tiana encouraging the girls In that midcourt, madika was encouraging the girls, kai was encouraging yeah, they just knew what to do without three of their superstar players playing.

Speaker 1:

And so that last quarter, um, that last quarter they rumbled, I just they went on a rampage. To be honest, they really went on a rampage. Um, as I said, emily was starting to get her right. She was just shooting them from anywhere. It was a yeah, she was just a mini soph, because soph can shoot them from anywhere and when you've got, when you've got a shooter like Soph and Emily, and that's the other thing. Versatility, I'll mention it. Versatility with Rambalara, you have got girls. So Emily's normally a wing attack and centre player, but in her team that she plays with in Melbourne she does play shooter, she plays goal attack. So having that versatility, so being able to turn around and go, we've got these girls.

Speaker 1:

And then Tash Bamblett coming in. You know, that's just a godsend, it's just a you know. But Jess Bamlett she recruited so so well, she's so smart, she knew what she needed from last year. She needed another quality shooter because Tash went to Shep's Wands, they lost some midfield. They struggled in that midcourt area last year they had midquarters that probably shouldn't have been playing A grade last year. But I mean, you can't pick and choose and you can only put side out on the paddock that you've got. So they really need a quality mid-court. And then you can rely on Tiana and Jess Bamblett all your life.

Speaker 1:

But if one goes down with an injury, which happened, and with Tiana not playing two games, um, and just wanting to get a break away for a while, so you needed other players to step in and just play that role. And yeah, tash Bandlett has done that. Yeah, lavelle did it on the weekend, um, alan Morgan did it. Yeah, the ever reliablereliable Kai, madika and, as I said, lani. She did have an off week. It wasn't really her quality game and it was like she just maybe there was some things going on, but it was like she was just a bit disinterested.

Speaker 1:

And you're going to have those sort of games, but as a side, it's a collective, it's not just one person, two people, it's a collective. These girls, you know they want to win a premiership and they want to be known and once you win a premiership you've got that bond for the rest of your life and they're sisters now and that's how they're playing. They're just playing for each other. So it's great to have that versatility, the way they've been playing.

Speaker 1:

But, as I said, that last quarter they just absolutely smashed Achuki United. They actually put on 22 goals to Achuki United's eight, absolutely. Yeah, the defense just knuckled down. Tiana and Tash Bandit just just knuckled down. Tiana and Tash Bambit just absolutely knuckled down. And it was so good to watch the two of them who were so like each other. They just played so well together. And, yeah, as I said before, it would have been pleasing for Jess Bambit to just sit back. Jesse Barnes and Emily in that shooting. It was just amazing that you can have three girls not play, three quality girls not play, but you've got players that come in that just fill that role and fill it magnificently.

Speaker 1:

Like I said, it was against Chukunot. I'm not sure how well they'd go against maybe a Moema or a Tony or even a Chuka, but I mean, you've got to try these things and these girls. They passed the test on the weekend, so final score was 68-33. So what's that? That's a 34-goal win or 35-goal win to Rambla. And they've just, you know Moema was their tightest game. You know they only won by six goals. Everything else they've been winning by 20, you know, 15 or more. So they really, really, on the weekend it just put it to themselves. I think they just thought, well, yeah, we need to do this, we need to show versatility.

Speaker 1:

Achuki United. I think they were a bit thrown out because when they got on the court it wasn't the side that they'd seen last time. They played them and they were probably thinking, okay, well, where's Jess Bairn, where's Sophie Atkinson, you know? And yeah, where's this other center that just runs and runs and runs? And they probably, as I said at the start, they probably thought, oh, yeah, we've got a chance here we've really got a chance. They're missing some quality players, but they brought quality players in and then that's a versatility and and the the thing is, you get these players like Lavelle and that they don't think they're good enough for A grade, but they get on there and they just play the game. It's just another game. And I think, especially Lavelle she had Tiana and Tash in that back line with her and I was just talking to her and just coaching and guiding her. And then you've got, as I said, jesse Barnes up in that shooting circle, in that shooting third, and she's talking to him and guiding him. So they've got leaders across the board and they've got girls that respect each other.

Speaker 1:

So it was a great win by Rambalara. So 15, as I said, 15 on the trot. But the work starts now. So they got yeah, they got a bye or a split round this weekend. So they don't play this week. So it gives Jess Bambler an extra time to heal her ankle a bit and, you know, for the girls to sort of heal themselves a bit, and then it's game on for them.

Speaker 1:

It's game on because in two weeks' time they have Denny Denny's been playing some very good netball. So on the weekend. Who did Denny play? Yeah, they played Cobham and absolutely smashed them. I think they've been playing some very good netball, denny, and I think, yeah, they've got some players back.

Speaker 1:

So the week before they only lost to Moema by eight goals. Moema's only just winning games, and when I say just yeah, they're only just eight goals six goals so they lost against Moema. They'd beaten the Thayer six goals, so they lost against Moama. They beat Nathalia by 10 goals. So this is going to be a cracking game in two weeks' time when they come up against Rumbelara and Denny. But I think Rumbelara is going to cherish these moments because there's nothing worse than coming up against side of the player and you beat them by 40, 50 goals coming into finals.

Speaker 1:

You really need those hard netball games to condition you for finals, because finals are a totally different ball game. Finals are where the nerves kick in. You know it's coming to the end of the year and a lot more people are watching you, so that's when the pressure comes on and I don't think Rumble are going to lose top spot Now. I mean, if they lose the next three, they will lose top spot, definite. But yeah, even if they drop one, or even if they drop two which I mean they don't want to they won't lose top spot because of the percentage they've got. So pretty much next week. If they win next week against Denny, you might as well say they've won the minor premiership. But I mean anything could happen. It's just their percentage is so high that Moe Ammon needs to just absolutely flog teams, and they are playing some hard teams themselves, and one of them is Denny and one of them is Rumba. So next week, two weeks' time, they'll have Sarah back, they'll have Soph back and hopefully they'll have Jesse Bamblett back. But yeah, you've got to be Jesse Bamblett. After the game on the weekend, you would have to be happy with what happened with the girls that she brought in Tash Bamblett, lavelle, ella Morgan these girls have come in and just played a role and just gelled with the side already.

Speaker 1:

As I said, these girls, they have got some talent, they know what they're doing. You've got exceptional talent from the back half to the front half. As I said, the defensive duo of Jesse Bamlett and Chandler Steele. Even Tash Bamlett on the weekend, jesse Bamlett and Chandler Steele is probably the best. They are the best defenders in the league. And then you've got, you know, sophie Atkinson and Jesse Barnes in that shooting circle. They are the best shooters in the league as well. And then you accompany that with the midcourt and the pace and the drive. Yeah, it's going to be the next. Yeah, we've got three weeks or four weeks before finals. So exciting times.

Speaker 1:

But yeah, hats off to Achuki United. They have got a young side and if they keep that nucleus of that young side and keep Tan Edwards as a coach because you can hear her on the court she's coaching the girls and she's telling them where to go and how to do things and that's a great leader. So my hat goes off to Tan Edwards, but also Bishy as well. So, as I said, bishy, she played at Moama. She's just a beast on that court, bishy. She's just so competitive but a hell of a nice person. So, yeah. So Chukin United are going to go places this year. They won't play finals, which is unfortunate for them. I think Bishy said that they did have a couple of injuries at the start of the year or whatever. But if Tan Edwards stays there, if Bishy stays there and they really work on the nucleus with these young girls, they will have a quality side.

Speaker 1:

Rambalara. On the other hand, they are quality. There's no doubt about it at the moment. They are quality, they are the stars. They're like the Harlem Globetrotters of netball. They've got skill, they've got pace, They've got understanding, they've got commitment. They've just got everything at the moment and, yeah, that could go in an instant, but, yeah, it proved on the weekend that you can get girls in and continue on the job. So, um, yeah next. So, as I said, they got a boy, um, or split round, and then, in two weeks time, um, on august the 24th, they come up against denny at home at rumbelara. So the, so the work rate will have to be lifted, and I mean, yeah, the business part of the year is going to start in two weeks' time and continue on until mid-September.

Speaker 1:

So, as I said, though, rumballara ran out winners by 35 goals against the Chukki United. They come up against Danny in two weeks' time, and they haven't wavered. They're winning games still, and that's all you need. You just need to win games. It doesn't matter how much by, but as long as you continue winning the game. So, yeah, I'll do a bit of a preview.

Speaker 1:

I'm going to hope to have some interviews as well with Jessie Bamlett just to talk about how this side compares to a side that she played in a losing grand final two years ago in 2022 against New England. So I'll try and get hold of her and have a bit of a chat, but, as I said, she's recovering from her ankle, so I hope it gets better, better. Um, also, yeah, my condolences go out to her because not only has she lost her mum, but she lost her grandma as well. So, um, yeah, a little bit going on with Jessie Bandwood at the moment and you know for her to be brave and strong like that, and then you know that that resonates across the board on the yeah, with the girls on the court, because they are strong, resilient, respectful. Yeah, this Rumbelara side is a damn good side and, yeah, they'll probably go down as one of the best netball sides going around. Yeah, I mean, danny have done it. They've gone undefeated. But yeah, this side is just phenomenal. They just know what to do. So, anyway, that is me. Nuff said we sent a pass.

Speaker 1:

As I said, a roundabout podcast about a man talking netball and gets criticized for it. That is my review of the Echiki United Rumballara game. As I said, rumballara come out winners, boy. Yeah, 35 goals, so 68 to 33. A tricky United with Valiant. Yeah, some great young players there and they'll go places in a couple of years' time. But anyway, that is me. Enough said, I'm out. Have a great week. Sorry it's a bit late, but I'm out. Have a great week. Sorry it's a bit late, but have a great week. Have a good night and I will try and get these interviews and preview. You know what finals are going to look like this week, and then next week is pretty much payday for the next three weeks for Rumblar and to see exactly how good this team is. And at the moment they're proving that they are damn good. So that is me. Enough said, I'm out. You enjoy the rest of your week. I'm out. Bye-bye.
